Township of Langley, BC (Sunday, October 11, 2015) –A four goal outburst in the third period for the Chilliwack Chiefs, ended the Rivermen’s four game winning streak on Sunday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre. It was the third meeting in the last 10 days between the two Mainland rivals. Coming into the matchup, Langley led the season series with a 2-0 record and sat in first place in the division with 14 points in nine games.
The Rivermen started the scoring at the 5:47 mark, with Trevor Ayre’s first career BCHL goal. The 17 year-old took a pass deep in the Chilliwack zone from Max Kaufman, and perfectly executed a toe-drag shot between the legs of Aiden Pelino. Chilliwack had a few chances to tie the game, including a breakaway opportunity, but Nick Trencianksy stood tall and stopped all 11 shots he faced.
In the second period, another member of the Rivermen scored his first BCHL goal. At 7:05 on the power play, Adam Sinclair was able to spot a loose puck off a body in front of Pelino, and wasted no time firing the puck to the back of the net. Will Campion registered the lone assist on the tally. Trencianksy turned aside all six shots he faced in the period, while Pelino allowed one goal on nine shots.
The Chiefs came out hard to begin the third period and tied the game with two goals in under four minutes. Darien Craighead scored a strange one from behind the net at the 1:11 mark to get the Chiefs on the board. At 4:33, Kohen Olischefski scored his third of the season to even it up at 2-2, as he capped off a great passing play in the slot. Just before the 10 minute mark, the Chiefs got their first lead of the game courtesy of Mitch Skapski. Under a minute later, Jake Smith had a golden opportunity to make it a 4-2 game for the Chiefs, as he was awarded a penalty shot, but Trencianksy made a left pad stop to keep it a one goal gap. However, Vimal Sukumaran iced the game with an empty net goal with just 15 seconds left.
Aiden Pelino picked up the win in net for the Chiefs stopping 21 of 23 shots, while Trenciansky lost his first start in five games making 22 saves on 25 shots.
The Rivermen remain in first place in the Mainland Division with a 7-3-0-0 record for 14 points, while the Chiefs jump behind them in second with a 5-4-1-2 record for 13 points. The ‘Riv begin an Interior road-trip next Friday in Trail against the Smoke Eaters.
