RIVERMEN READY TO ROAST SMOKIES ON BACK TO BUSINESS NIGHT

Township of Langley, BC (Saturday, January 24, 2015) – On a night where the infamous Green Men will be at the Langley Events Centre, the Langley Rivermen are hoping to leave the Trail Smoke Eaters feeling black and blue as the two teams face-off tonight at 7:00PM on Back to Business Night.

The Rivermen look for their third straight win after coming from behind to defeat division rivals, the Chilliwack Chiefs 4-3 last Wednesday night at the LEC.

“That was another tough game,” said Head Coach and General Manager Bobby Henderson. “We had to dig deep going into the third period down a goal. I was happy with how we responded and the effort from the guys.”

Langley is 5-3 since the holiday break which includes three important wins over the Chiefs. The team is getting offense from all four lines including forward Matt Graham, who has stepped up with 10 points in his last 5 games. Gage Torrel leads the team with 50 points (21g, 29a) in 44 games.

“It’s nice to see the whole team chipping in offensively,” said Torrel. “If we keep this up we’ll be in good shape heading into the playoffs.”

This is the final meeting of the season between the Rivermen and Smoke Eaters. The two teams met back in October when the Rivermen were edged out in overtime 3-2 at Cominco Arena in Trail. Torrel and Dante Hahn each had a goal and an assist while Darren Martin made 24 saves in a losing effort. Langley ran into a hot goaltender as Adam Scott stopped 36 of 38 shots to steal the extra point. Early in the first period, in an unfortunate incident, Rivermen defenceman Jacob Zeleznikar fell awkwardly into the boards and ended up being taken to the hospital in Trail with a broken femur, which meant the team would be without him for the remainder of the season.

The Smoke Eaters, who are sixth in the Interior Division, have had their struggles in the second half of the season, winning 2 of 8 games this month including an overtime loss in Chilliwack last night, despite leading 7-4 in the third period. A couple of bright spots this season have been Charlie Zuccarini and Jake Lucchini. The forwards have combined for 106 points this season. Zuccarini leads the team with 27 goals.

Fans will receive a special treat as Scully and Force, better known as the Green Men will be at tonight’s game as part of their Farewell Tour sponsored by Pacific Coastal Airlines. They’ll be taking pictures, signing autographs and participating in in-game contests. It’s also Back to Business Night where Rivermen sponsors and local business will be on the concourse handing out prizes and gifts.
