Rivermen Unable to Sweep Express, Come up Short

Township of Langley, BC (Saturday, January 3, 2015) – The Langley Rivermen (20-14-1-4 = 45) will have to wait another day to make the move into first place in the Mainland Division. The Rivermen were unable make it a weekend sweep, falling 4-3 to the Coquitlam Express (15-18-1-4 = 35) at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday night.

Langley was unable to catch up after giving up two goals in the first period. Brett Supinski opened the scoring 4:32 in when he beat goaltender Darren Martin, for his 26th of the season. With just over three minutes to play in the frame, Coquitlam would make it 2-0 thanks to Brendan Lamont, who scored his 14th of the season.

The Rivermen would cut the lead in half when Hunter Anderson scored the lone goal of the period mid-way through to make it 2-1. Charlie Pelnik and Cole Williams assisted on Anderson’s 8th of the season.

The third period saw both teams trade a pair of goals including Gage Torrel’s team-leading 19th of the season, narrowing the Express lead to 3-2. Shortly after that, Express forward Corey Mackin netted his BCHL leading 37th of the year and 65th point on a short-handed breakaway all but sealing the deal for Coquitlam, who won their 15th game of the season. Rivermen Captain Kevan Kilistoff would add one late but to no avail as they still came up on the short-end.

Darren Martin made his second start in as many days, stopping 23 shots in a losing effort. Express goaltender Chris Tai also made back-to-back starts and performed better tonight after allowing six goals on Friday night, he made 36 saves to pick up his 11th win of the season.

The Rivermen resume their busy stretch next weekend with a pivotal three games in three days, all against the Chilliwack Chiefs, beginning Friday night in Langley. The team will get another shot at first place, as they trail the Chiefs by one point.
