Rivermen weekend recap December 6th and 7th

The Langley Rivermen made the trip out to the Chilliwack Coliseum on Friday for the second time this season, for their first game of the weekend.

Langley continued their scoring prowess early in the first period, scoring two goals 38 seconds apart. Luke Pfoh got the scoring going on a breakaway thanks to a great feed from Jackson Krill for his 7th of the season. Then Dalton MacGillivray would add onto the Rivermen lead for this 8th of the season on a pass from Ryan Schelling, and the visitors would take that 2-0 lead to the locker room.

Luke Pfoh would score his second of the game on a broken play in front, and the Rivermen would lead 3-0 with 8:29 gone in the second.

A minute and a half later, Chilliwack would cut Langley’s lead to two on a shot from the slot. Shortly after, Ethan Merner would capitalize on an error from Chiefs goaltender Kevin Jones to make it 4-1 Rivermen with 11:29 gone in the middle frame.

Ryan Schelling ripped home his 17th of the season from the left circle on a power play making it 5-1 Langley with 6:08 remaining in the second period.

Chilliwack would score a pair of goals 5 minutes apart to end the second period, making it 5-3 Rivermen going into the third period.

The Chiefs scored 6 unanswered goals in the third period, taking the two team’s second meeting of the season 9-5.

Saturday night’s game against the Powell River Kings was the annual Teddy Bear toss game at the George Preston Arena and it didn’t take long for Langley to have the fur fly. Sebastian Bradshaw played a pass out front that went off a Kings skate and into the visitor’s net for his fourth of the season and a 1-0 Rivermen lead with 5:38 gone in the first, making it rain Teddy Bears early in the contest.

Langley would add onto their lead with 9:12 gone in the second period as Ryan Schelling would snipe home his 18th of the season on a great feed from Dalton MacGillivray, ensuring the Rivermen would go into the second period up 2-0.

The Kings cut the Rivermen lead to 2-1, with 4:14 gone in the second period on a shot from the slot. Langley piled on 12 more shots in the second period but it would remain 2-1 for the home side going into the third period.

Dalton MacGillivray would make it 3-1 Langley 34 seconds into the third, capitalizing on a defensive mistake by the Kings.

6 minutes later, Max Jelavic would score on a rebound during a Kings power play to cut the Rivermen lead to 3-2.

1:23 later, Henry Butte would rip home a shot from the left wing after a faceoff win by Owen Dewitt giving his team a two-goal lead once again in what was Butte’s first career BCHL goal.

With 5:13 to go, Powell River’s Noah Samanski would cut the Rivermen lead to 4-3, but Langley would defend strongly to win their 12th game of the season and final at home before the Christmas break. It was also Coquitlam, BC’s Brayden Burrows first BCHL win in the Rivermen net, as he turned aside 30 shots in his first career start.
