Duncan, BC – The Langley Rivermen keep their 2014 point streak going at nine games playing to their second tie of the year, 2-2 with the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
Goaltending was the story Saturday night as both Lyndon Stanwood and Cowichan’s Robin Gusse put forward incredible efforts in goal as the Rivermen outshot the Capitals 40-37.
Despite a scoreless opening period, the game began with plenty of intensity as both teams skated hard and weren’t shy to use the body. It took over 31 minutes to see the game’s first goal when Dane Gibson converted on a back-door feed on a two-man Cowichan advantage. Despite five power plays through the first two periods, the Rivermen simply could not beat Gusse who made 23 saves after 40 minutes.
Langley finally beat Gusse when Mitch McLain scored his 21st at the top of the crease with Jakob Reichert picking up the lone assist to tie the game at one 4:18 into the third on the RIvermen’s 27th shot. Exactly three minutes later, Marcus Vela fired home his ninth, on the power play on a beautiful pass from James Robinson as the Rivermen took the lead 2-1.
Both teams continued to press but it was Daniel Wanner who got the tying goal with just over four minutes to play in the third period.
Both overtime periods saw several potential game ending scoring chances by both teams but Stanwood and Gusse turned shooters away time and again.
The Rivermen remain ten points up on Prince George for first place in the Mainland division while Langley can make it ten straight games with at least a single point finishing off their two-game Island road trip with their only visit of the regular season to the Victoria Grizzlies.
