Township of Langley, BC (Friday, December 19, 2014) – The Langley Rivermen scored a season-high eight goals on route to an 8-5 thumping of the Powell River Kings on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre on Day 2 of Rivmas.
Gage Torrel led the Rivermen with a goal and four assists, Ryan Coulter assisted four times and Evan Anderson scored twice and added a helper as Langley improved its home record to 11-5-1-1 and remain in second place in the BCHL Mainland Division.
“It was a really good, hard fought battle tonight,” said Anderson. “It was our second game in as many days so we knew we had to bring it against a very skilled Powell River team.”
“It was a fun game to play,” said forward Matt Graham. “All four lines were going; it was fun to be a part of and put on a nice show for the crowd.”
The Kings scored the lone goal of the opening period when Captain JJ Coleshaw found a loose puck and put it past Rivermen net minder Bo Didur on the power play.
The second period was all Langley; they scored five goals, including three in the first 4:25 of the period to take the lead. Anderson scored back-to-back markers and Colton Kehler scored on a set play from Justin Szeto off the face-off. Erik Udahl netted his sixth of the season and Hunter Anderson finished off a nice cross ice feed from Torrel as the Rivermen went into the intermission up 5-3.
“In the second we wanted to get pucks and bodies to the net,” said Szeto. “It was a combination of all our efforts and it was good to see some puck luck go our way.”
“I think it’s just chemistry,” said E. Anderson. “We’ve stuck with these lines for about a month now and I think we’re starting to click and you’re seeing that out there.”
Langley Captain Kevan Kilistoff would score his team-leading sixteenth of the season early in the third on a partial breakaway, beating Brett Magnus blocker-side to extend the lead to 6-3. The teams would trade a couple of goals after that as Torrel and Graham scored late for the Rivermen to seal the deal.
Didur stopped 29 shots for his thirteenth win of the season.
The Rivermen will look to head into the holiday break on a positive note as they play their third game in three nights when they host the Victoria Grizzlies on Saturday night on the final day of Rivmas. Fans get free admission and receive either a five dollar food or beverage voucher or a five dollar off merchandise voucher. Face-off is at 7:00PM at the Langley Events Centre.
