Congratulations to alumni Gage Torrel, who was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rookie of the week.
Official release from the BCHL:
Gage Torrel joined the Langley Rivermen halfway through the 2013-14 BCHL season and wasted no time showing he’d be an impact player in the league as he scored 10 points in his first seven games.
Now just 15 games into his NCAA career with Lake Superior State University, he’s quickly proving again he will be a difference maker for the Lakers.
The Monticello, Minn. native was just named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rookie of the week after producing a game-winner plus two helpers in an LSSU road sweep at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
Torrel opened the scoring, while LSSU was shorthanded, and assisted on the other goal in a 2-0 win Dec. 5 that clinched the sweep. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound playmaker helped set up the Lakers first goal in what would be a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Nanooks to open the series the night before.
The goal and two assists Torrel posted led all NCAA freshman scorers for the weekend and tied him for most points by a WCHA player on the weekend.
Torrel’s six assists has him tied for the team lead and he is third on the team with nine points. The weekly WCHA award is the first rookie nod to go to an LSSU player since Adian Wright, a former Powell River Kings defenceman, earned one in December of 2014.
With Langley, Torrel registered 36 goals and 52 assists for 88 points in 82 games.
