Rivermen Look to De-Claw Grizzlies on Final Day of Rivmas

Township of Langley, BC (Saturday, December 20, 2014) – The Langley Rivermen (19-12-1-4 = 43) get ready to finish off the calendar year with their third game in as many nights as they host the Victoria Grizzlies (14-10-1-6 = 35) on the final day of Rivmas at 7:00PM at the Langley Events Centre.

This will be the team’s tenth game in twenty days as the BCHL heads into the holiday break this weekend. Langley showed their offensive firepower on Friday night when they scored a season-high eight goals, taking down the Powell River Kings 8-5 at the LEC. Forwards Gage Torrel (5), Ryan Coulter (4) and Evan Anderson (3) had big nights for the team, scoring a combined twelve points.

“Everybody’s looking forward to the break,” said Justin Szeto. “The out of town guys are looking forward to going home but we’ve got a big game tonight and that’s our main focus, to get another two points in front of our home crowd.”

The Rivermen and Grizzlies meet for the second time this season. Their first matchup was the second game of the regular season during the BCHL Showcase at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. Victoria squeaked out a 2-1 win back on September 21. The teams will meet a final time in ‘The Garden City’ in February.

“Both squads are a lot different than what we started out the season with,” said Rivermen Assistant Coach Kurt Astle. “They’ve picked up some new guys and we’ve also added some great players to the team; it’ll be a different look for both teams.”

Langley outshot Victoria 35-28. Evan Anderson scored the only goal for the Rivermen in that game and goaltender Darren Martin stopped 26 shots in the loss. Martin has stepped up his game up this month, winning three of his last four starts. He should be between the pipes tonight as Bo Didur has started the previous two games.

Victoria is playing their second straight game as they lost in Coquitlam on Friday night, 3-2 in overtime. They will finish off their weekend in Surrey on Sunday night. The Grizzlies are in a three-way fight for second place in the Island Division along with Powell River and Alberni Valley.

This is the third and final day of Rivmas – fans get free admission and a five dollar food and beverage or merchandise voucher.

The Rivermen return from the holiday break on Saturday, January 3, 2015 when they host the Coquitlam Express at 7:00PM at the Langley Events Centre.

The Langley Rivermen want to wish you a Happy Holiday and a safe New Year. We look forward to seeing you in 2015.
